Medication Reminder Tool

Intro

Supporting Patient Adherence Through SMS Medication Reminders

Patients don’t always refill their prescriptions on time for a variety of reasons. One of the factors is whether or not patients are adhering to their prescribed medication doses. It can be difficult for a pharmacy to know if a patient is adherent since their medication is taken at home and often is not tracked. OptumRx Specialty Pharmacy wanted to create a Medication Reminder Tool for patients that would allow their pharmacy team to have more visibility into patient’s adherence and create the opportunity to increase adherence through digital support and education.
My Role

Step 1

Map The Story

I worked with the clinical lead at OptumRx Specialty Pharmacy to map out the patient journey which included onboarding, configuring reminder settings, recording medication doses.
Step 2

Wireframes

I developed wireframes to get alignment on user flow for the reminder configuration screens and dose recording screens.
Step 3

Prototype

I created a click-through prototype to get feedback and buy in from all stakeholders. The screens that patients would interact with included a reminder configuration screen, a communication settings screen and a dose recording screen.
Step 4

Measure & Iterate

The Medication Reminder Tool was launched 6/28/2021. The results displayed here reflect the first four months. We recognize that because our client hadn’t previously used a medication reminder tool with patients, the first release of this tool is serving as a baseline for future iterations.

I am currently collecting user data and gathering feedback from patients. We are trying to understand if patients are taking their medications, but not reporting them. I am also working with our team to determine ways we can improve adherence rates by addressing the obstacles patients might be facing or improving their experience with using the tool.
